The friends in your leaderboard are ranked by the completion percentage today so far, with the people closest to reaching their step goal (or having exceeded it) at the top. If you have more than three friends, you will only see the top three on the "Challenges" tab. You can see all your friends ranked on the leaderboard by choosing the "Friends" tab.
